The Group by Mary McCarthy Yesterday (June 21) was the 100th birthday of Mary McCarthy, (1912–1989) so it's fitting to present her best-known work, The Group. The 1963 novel hit the New York Times bestseller list and stayed there for nearly two years. Considered scandalous for its time, it touched on issues of contraception, abortion, mental illness, male chauvinism, and lesbian relationships, as experienced by young women in the 1930s.
