It noted parties across the county filling homes. “Streets were thronged at the late hour and never did a new year receive a more rousing welcome as above the din on the streets rose the screech of the fire sirens,” the Times reported. “Old faithful, the fire whistle on the Occidental Mill gave vent to the last blast, passing into discard with the Old Year after 25 years of service.”
