The banner headline on the Humboldt Times New Year’s Day edition shouted boldly “1926 USHERS IN PROSPERITY.” “Whistles, bells, (and) noise bid the old year farewell and welcomed in the new last night when Eureka and Humboldt County indulged in the grand finale of merrymaking as … midnight came, paused and passed into eternity,” a front page article on welcoming the new year stated. It noted parties across the county filling homes. “Streets were thronged at the late hour and never did a new year receive a more rousing welcome as above the din on the streets rose the screech of the fire sirens,” the Times reported. “Old faithful, the fire whistle on the Occidental Mill gave vent to the last blast, passing into discard with the Old Year after 25 years of service.”
