Can animals be victims of hate speech?
Yes, according to a recent article by two university academics in the
Oxford Journal of Legal Studies. They invoked heavy-hitting āhate speechā arguments to contend that what applies to humans must also apply to animals.
So why did the chicken cross the road? Apparently to meet up with the radical activists who are jumping on this bandwagon to stop such āhate speechā ā and criminalise harmful stereotypes about chickens whoāve flown the coop.
PETA, the radical animal rights group, says we must all stop using anti-animal language.
So instead of saying: āBring home the baconā
You must say: āBring home the bagelsā
And rather than say: āTake the bull by the hornsā
You must say: āTake the flower by the thornsā.
Yes, it sounds absurd, but āhate speechā is one of todayās most controversial legal issues. Hate speech is defined as āa direct attack against people on the basis of what we call protected characteristics: race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity and serious diseaseā.
But imagine if the word āspeciesā was added to that list. All those cute cat videos would instantly vanish from YouTube for spreading āharmful stereotypesā. And David Attenboroughās documentaries would be banned for invasion of privacy.
The absurdities are endless. But this is where you end up if you begin with a defective understanding of what it means to be a human being. Itās why this independent news platform will tackle both the serious and the absurd ā always unpacking the truth for you.
