Dear morrison,   Can animals be victims of hate speech?   Yes, according to a recent article by two university academics in the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies. They invoked heavy-hitting ‘hate speech’ arguments to contend that what applies to humans must also apply to animals.   So why did the chicken cross the road?   Apparently to meet up with the radical activists who are jumping on this bandwagon to stop such ‘hate speech’ – and criminalise harmful stereotypes about chickens who’ve flown the coop.   PETA, the radical animal rights group, says we must all stop using anti-animal language.   So instead of saying:      “Bring home the bacon” You must say:               “Bring home the bagels”   And rather than say:      “Take the bull by the horns” You must say:               “Take the flower by the thorns”.   Yes, it sounds absurd, but ‘hate speech’ is one of today’s most controversial legal issues.   Hate speech is defined as “a direct attack against people on the basis of what we call protected characteristics: race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity and serious disease”.   But imagine if the word “species” was added to that list. All those cute cat videos would instantly vanish from YouTube for spreading ‘harmful stereotypes’. And David Attenborough’s documentaries would be banned for invasion of privacy.   The absurdities are endless.
