Your New Favorite Israeli Condiment: Amba, a Pickled Mango Sauce

Amba, a pickled mango sauce, is one of my favorite Jewish food stories related to Israel, where it has become a staple served with falafel, shawarma and sabich sandwiches all over. The sauce’s origin actually begins in India, and was brought to Iraq by Jewish traders. It is believed that amba was developed sometime during the 19th century. Iraqi Jews started arriving in Israel in the 1940s and 1950s, and quickly started producing their own amba there to serve with sabich, the traditional Iraqi breakfast of potatoes, fried eggplant and hard boiled eggs. Israelis fell in love with the sweet, spicy, pickled sauce and started using it on other stuffed sandwiches. Today, amba has become so popular you can even find it at Trader Joe's, but if you are up for it, make your own with Sonya Sanford’s recipe.

Shadow banning is a practice used in online moderation that consists of preventing a user’s content from being seen by others—either partially or totally—without the user being notified or aware of it. This is typically done as a consequence of violating a platform’s rules.

The term shadow ban can be used as a verb meaning to ban a user in such a way and as a noun referring to such a ban. The adjective form is shadow banned. Similar terms such as ghost ban, stealth ban, and comment ban are sometimes used synonymously with shadow ban.

In contrast, traditional bans typically result in the banned user not being able to access their account at all.

Shadow banning instead allows the user to continue to use the site seemingly as normal. The user may not initially realize that they have been shadow banned until they notice a lack of interactions with the content that they post (because it is being hidden completely or displayed to fewer users).

The term shadow banning has been applied to moderation practices used by many popular online platforms, such as Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook. Some websites explicitly use the term shadow banning in their public rules.

The practice is often criticized due to its lack of transparency or for other reasons. Some critics accuse websites of using shadow banning to censor particular opinions or viewpoints.

Example: The site is known for shadow banning users that violate its rules, which it claims is easier and more effective than outright banning them.

The 2012 documentary "The Queen of Versailles" is known for its over-the-top displays of jaw-dropping wealth, following the Siegel family as they aim to build the largest single-family residence in the United States: an 85,000-square-foot mansion in Windermere, Fla. At the time, there was a sense of schadenfreude online as the film showed the family's timeshare fortune take a tumble in the 2008 financial crisis and construction on the home ground to a halt. Now the "queen" of the manor, Jackie Siegel is back with a new reality series in which she shows off the ongoing renovations — including an imported British pub and an aviary with baby toucans. In an interview with The Post, Siegel talks about the inspiration behind her decision to go back in front of the cameras: Her daughter Victoria's overdose death, at age 18, in 2015 “We agreed to do the show because [it would] follow the house — and also our personal story, with our legacy of the loss of our daughter," Siegel said. Seven years later, Siegel still won’t let cleaners into Victoria's bedroom. To keep memories close, she maintains an altar in the house where she lights incense every day and prays for her daughter. “When Victoria died, it felt like my world fell apart, and all the money in the world could not bring her back,” Siegel told The Post.
