Dear friend,
Aristotle wrote: “All men by nature desire to know.”
The pursuit of knowledge about the most important things has been the central activity of Hillsdale College for over 175 years.
In contrast, most American colleges and universities have embraced the “postmodern” idea that knowledge, like truth, is relative—that there are no real answers to questions like “What is the best kind of life?” and “What is the right way to act?”
In 1931, Winston Churchill wrote an essay in which he imagined a future where mankind had secured a life of great pleasure, wealth, and convenience. But, Churchill wondered, would that be sufficient for happiness?
What did they know more than we know about the answers to the simple questions which man has asked since the earliest dawn of reason—‘Why are we here? What is the purpose of life? Whither are we going?’ No material progress, even though it takes shapes we cannot now conceive, or however it may expand the faculties of man, can bring comfort to his soul.
Hillsdale’s newest free online course, “Introduction to Western Philosophy,” will examine just such questions as Churchill poses.
It will pursue answers to these questions by studying the arguments of great Western philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Immanuel Kant, and C.S. Lewis.
“Introduction to Western Philosophy” launches on September 8, and we need your help to make this course a success.
Hillsdale produces and promotes free online courses, as we do all of our work, while refusing to accept government funding—not even indirectly in the form of federal or state student grants or loans.
With your tax-deductible gift today, we can enroll thousands of Americans in “Introduction to Western Philosophy” and other online courses on topics such as the Constitution and American history.
We have set a goal to invest $300,000 in the promotion of “Introduction to Western Philosophy” and our other online courses, which we must raise by midnight on August 31.
It’s an ambitious goal, but one I know we can reach with your help.
Please help promote Hillsdale’s free online courses and other educational outreach efforts in this critical year for America by giving your best gift today. I’ve included a secure link for you to make your tax-deductible gift below:
