NUMBERS 19:1-22:1

 Numbers 19:1–22:1

Laws for Purification

19 Now the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, “This is the statute of the law that the Lord has commanded: Tell the people of Israel to bring you a red heifer without defect, in which there is no blemish, mand on which a yoke has never come. And you shall give it to Eleazar the priest, and nit shall be taken outside the camp and slaughtered before him. And Eleazar the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger, and osprinkle some of its blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times. And the heifer shall be burned in his sight. pIts skin, its flesh, and its blood, with its dung, shall be burned. And the priest shall take qcedarwood and hyssop and scarlet yarn, and throw them into the fire burning the heifer. Then the priest rshall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp. But the priest shall be unclean until evening. sThe one who burns the heifer rshall wash his clothes in water and bathe his body in water and shall be unclean until evening. And a man who is clean shall gather up tthe ashes of the heifer and deposit them outside the camp in a uclean place. And they shall be kept for the water for vimpurity for the congregation of the people of Israel; it is a sin offering. 10 And the one who gathers the ashes of the heifer rshall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. And this shall be a perpetual statute for the people of Israel, and for the stranger who sojourns among them.

11 w“Whoever touches the dead body of any person shall be unclean seven days. 12 He xshall cleanse himself with the water on the third day and on the seventh day, and so be clean. But if he does not cleanse himself on the third day and on the seventh day, he will not become clean. 13 Whoever touches a dead person, the body of anyone who has died, and does not cleanse himself, ydefiles the tabernacle of the Lordzand that person shall be cut off from Israel; because the water for impurity was not thrown on him, he shall be unclean. His uncleanness is still on him.

14 “This is the law when someone dies in a tent: everyone who comes into the tent and everyone who is in the tent shall be unclean seven days. 15 And every aopen vessel that has no cover fastened on it is unclean. 16 bWhoever in the open field touches someone who was killed with a sword or who died naturally, or touches a human bone or a cgrave, shall be unclean seven days. 17 For the unclean they shall take dsome ashes of the burnt sin offering, and fresh1 water shall be added in a vessel. 18 Then a clean person shall take ehyssop and dip it in the water and sprinkle it on the tent and on all the furnishings and on the persons who were there and on whoever touched the bone, or the slain or the dead or the grave. 19 And the clean person shall sprinkle it on the unclean fon the third day and on the seventh day. gThus on the seventh day he shall cleanse him, and he shall hwash his clothes and bathe himself in water, and at evening he shall be clean.

20 “If the man who is unclean does not cleanse himself, ithat person shall be cut off from the midst of the assembly, since he has defiled the sanctuary of the Lord. Because the water for impurity has not been thrown on him, he is unclean. 21 And it shall be a statute forever for them. The one who sprinkles the water for impurity shall wash his clothes, and the one who touches the water for impurity shall be unclean until evening. 22 And jwhatever the unclean person touches shall be unclean, and anyone who touches it shall be unclean until evening.”

The Death of Miriam

20 And the people of Israel, the whole congregation, came kinto the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh. And lMiriam died there and was buried there.

The Waters of Meribah

mNow there was no water for the congregation. nAnd they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. And the people oquarreled with Moses and said, “Would that we had perished pwhen our brothers perished before the LordWhy have you brought the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness, that we should die here, both we and our cattle? And qwhy have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink.” Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and rfell on their faces. sAnd the glory of the Lord appeared to them, and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, t“Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So uyou shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.” And Moses took the staff vfrom before the Lord, as he commanded him.

Moses Strikes the Rock

10 Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, w“Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” 11 And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, uand water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. 12 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because xyou did not believe in me, yto uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.” 13 zThese are the waters of Meribah,1 where the people of Israel quarreled with the Lord, and through them he showed himself holy.

Edom Refuses Passage

14 aMoses sent messengers from Kadesh to bthe king of Edom: “Thus says cyour brother Israel: You know all the hardship that we have met: 15 dhow our fathers went down to Egypt, eand we lived in Egypt a long time. fAnd the Egyptians dealt harshly with us and our fathers. 16 And gwhen we cried to the Lord, he heard our voice and hsent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. And here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory. 17 iPlease let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or vineyard, jor drink water from a well. We will go along the King’s Highway. We will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.” 18 But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through, lest I come out with the sword against you.” 19 And the people of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, kand if we drink of your water, I and my livestock, lthen I will pay for it. Let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.” 20 But he said, m“You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force. 21 Thus Edom nrefused to give Israel passage through his territory, so Israel oturned away from him.

The Death of Aaron

22 And they journeyed from pKadesh, and the people of Israel, the whole congregation, came to qMount Hor. 23 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom, 24 r“Let Aaron be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land that I have given to the people of Israel, because syou rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah. 25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son and bring them up to Mount Hor. 26 And strip Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. And Aaron rshall be gathered to his people and shall die there.” 27 Moses did as the Lord commanded. And they went up Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation. 28 tAnd Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. And Aaron died there uon the top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain. 29 And when all the congregation saw that Aaron had perished, vall the house of Israel wept for Aaron thirty days.

Arad Destroyed

21 When wthe Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in xthe Negeb, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive. yAnd Israel vowed a vow to the Lord and said, “If you will indeed give this people into my hand, then I will devote their cities to destruction.”1 And the Lord heeded the voice of Israel and gave over the Canaanites, and they devoted them and their cities to destruction. So the name of the place was called zHormah.2

The Bronze Serpent

From Mount Hor athey set out by the way to the Red Sea, bto go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people cspoke against God and against Moses, d“Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and ewe loathe this worthless food.” fThen the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and gthey bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. hAnd the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. iPray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” So jMoses made a bronze3 serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

The Song of the Well

10 And the people of Israel set out and kcamped in Oboth. 11 kAnd they set out from Oboth and kcamped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness that is opposite Moab, toward the sunrise. 12 From there they set out and camped in lthe Valley of Zered. 13 From there they set out and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that extends from the border of the Amorites, for the mArnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14 Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord,

“Waheb in Suphah, and the valleys of the Arnon,

15  and the slope of the valleys

that extends to the seat of nAr,

and leans to the border of Moab.”

16 And from there they continued oto Beer;4 that is the well of which …

Cain & Abel Cursed From the Ground

Cain & Abel

Cursed From the Ground

God said, “Now you are cursed from the very ground which received your brother’s blood by your hands. From this day forth, you will work the ground, but it will not yield food. You shall roam the earth, a fugitive and a wanderer.” —iBIBLE Chapter 3

Scripture reference: Genesis 4:11–12

In the garden, when God confronted Adam for eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, God issued forth a punishment: the ground itself would be cursed. It would produce thorns and thistles and cause work to forever be difficult for him and all who were to come after.

In murdering his brother, Cain had spilled his brother’s blood on the ground. That very blood cried out to the Lord, testifying to the evil that had been done. Now was the time for God to confront Cain’s sin directly. God gives Cain his first punishment, saying: “Now you are cursed from the very ground which received your brother’s blood by your hands.” Instead of creation being cursed, like in Adam’s case, Cain himself is cursed from the ground.

Instead of the environment being cursed, like in Adam’s case, Cain himself is cursed from the ground.

God explains, “From this day forth, you will work the ground, but it will not yield food.” He will work and toil and the earth, having been forced to experience his brother’s shed blood, will not produce food for him. As someone who worked the ground, Cain should have been tending it with water and fertilizer and helping the plants grow, but now—despite his best efforts to grow things—it will be futile. He is cut off from the land, the key to his own vocation as a farmer.

The second punishment that Cain receives is that he will “roam the earth, a fugitive and a wanderer.” This displacement is also reminiscent of Adam and Eve being barred from entering back into the garden after their sin. But this time, there is no place for Cain to rest—no place where he will feel like he is home. His actions will follow him wherever he goes, and that guilt will be with him for the rest of his life as he wanders the earth.

Our Response

“At least I haven’t killed anyone,” is a common response that people give when asked the question: “Are you a good person?” And it’s certainly true that murdering another is evil, as evidenced by Cain’s story, and as stated in the Ten Commandments. Cain had taken away the gift of life given to his brother Abel, and God’s attitude toward murder has not changed.

True, we may not have murdered anyone, but Jesus helps us look at the true state of our hearts when He says,

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.” —Matthew 5:21–22 [ESV]

We are called to not only refrain from our evil inclinations that actually hurt our neighbor, but we are to refrain from the evil inclinations of our heart in harboring resentment or anger toward them. If we are to measure ourselves against this law, we would all be guilty of it to some degree at some point in our lives.

The Good News is that Jesus Christ came into the world to save His people. He came to save us from our anger, from our wrath, from our inclination to vengeance and revenge. And He died to secure a place in Heaven for us, knowing that we would fall short of His perfect standard.

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.” —Ephesians 1:7

So, when you find the anger bubbling in your chest, or bitterness toward your neighbor growing by the day, look to Christ. Repent and find forgiveness in Him. Trust in His complete work on the cross, knowing that God can forgive any sin, and brings healing to all suffering.

A Prayer for This Week

Dear Heavenly Father, we admit that we sometimes play the comparison game, looking at our brothers and sisters in Christ and believing that we are somehow better. But, Lord, you’ve given us your Word which says: “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Yet you do not leave us in our sin forever, You readily forgive and renew us. Thank You for Your grace which you so mercifully give to all of us. Help us to walk in Your ways and love those around us well. In Jesus’s name, we pray. Amen.

Hi Timor, I appreciate you so much! You are giving babies like Shana’s a chance.

Hi Timor,

I appreciate you so much! You are giving babies like Shana’s a chance.

When I heard her story, I knew I had to share it with you. It’s just one example of how God is using your compassion and love for life to rescue mothers and their babies from the pain of abortion through our Option Ultrasound program.

Option Ultrasound is a donor-funded program that equips pregnancy medical centers with ultrasound machines and nurses’ sonography training to introduce mothers considering abortion to the child growing in their womb.

Shana was pregnant and set on getting an abortion when she walked by a pregnancy medical center equipped with an ultrasound machine made possible by friends like you. She glanced at the sign offering free ultrasounds.

One of the workers happened to be outside and saw Shana’s glance. She raced to catch up with the young woman. “Do you need a pregnancy test?” she asked.

“No, I just need information on an abortion,” Shana replied. The expectant mom agreed to a free ultrasound and stepped into the pregnancy medical center — and that’s where she met her child.

Shana saw an active, fully formed baby bouncing around and rubbing its face with its hands on the screen. Shana couldn’t believe what she was seeing. She said, “Oh my, it’s a baby!”

Right then, Shana changed her mind. Instead of abortion, she decided to make an adoption plan. The pregnancy medical center helped her make arrangements.

For many women like Shana, one look at the precious life growing inside of them is all it takes to soften their hearts and choose life. According to our research, more than 54% of abortion-minded women who receive counseling and an ultrasound choose life.

With the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, abortion now becomes a state matter, and the opportunity for mothers considering abortion to see the life growing inside of them is more critical than ever.

Shana’s baby had a chance to live because of friends like you. You not only saved the baby’s life, but you also saved Shana from making a mistake that would haunt her for the rest of her life.

Timor, thank you again for saving the baby and mom through your compassionate support.

Dear MoveOn member,

 Dear MoveOn member,

Last week, the far-right Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and in response to that, it is easy to fall into despair. But we want to tell you that there is still hope, and there are actions we can all take right now to help fight back.

MoveOn has been preparing for this for months, and we have built out a midterm election program that is laser-focused on the states and races that will have the biggest impact on alleviating the suffering which the loss of Roe has caused.

Today, we're asking you to donate $3 directly to the gubernatorial campaigns for Stacey Abrams in Georgia, Katie Hobbs in Arizona, Beto O'Rourke in Texas, and Gretchen Whitmer in Michigan. Please click here to chip in now. 100% of your donation will go directly to their campaigns.

Why these races?

All four of these states had trigger bans on the books, and in the three that currently have Republican governors (Arizona, Georgia, and Texas), abortion is now banned.

In Michigan, the only reason that abortion remains legal is because Governor Whitmer is personally leading the charge to fight against the law and stop it from being implemented.

And that is why we need to re-elect Gov. Whitmer and flip Arizona, Georgia, and Texas blue—so that the most powerful elected officials can use their power to stop these bans and ensure that reproductive rights in their states are protected.

Will you split a $3 donation between their campaigns today? 100% of your donation will go directly to their campaigns.

Stacey Abrams, Beto O'Rourke, and Katie Hobbs have all joined Governor Whitmer in committing to repealing the bans in their states and defending reproductive rights. If they lose, the consequences will be dire.

The Trump-endorsed GOP candidate for governor in Arizona has vowed to pass new laws in the state that would make abortion illegal even in the cases of rape, incest, or when continuing the pregnancy would cause the death of the pregnant person.1

In the moments after last Friday's decision, Georgia GOP candidate and current Governor Brian Kemp directed his office to work to immediately implement a previously blocked law banning all abortions in Georgia after six weeks, long before most people know they're pregnant.2

The current leader in the GOP primary in Michigan not only says she agrees with the state's trigger ban, but she has also spread baseless, dangerous conspiracy theories about Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health care providers.3

And in Texas, Greg Abbott cheered on the decision, celebrating the total ban on abortion beginning at conception, with no exception for rape or incest, which will go into effect across the state in the coming days.4

Without the protection of Roe at the federal level, it is absolutely essential that states have strong leaders who will fight to protect the right to bodily autonomy for the people of their states. This is one of the most concrete ways that we can fight back against the radical, pro-forced-birth agenda of the GOP.

Tiumothy, will you join us and chip in $3 right now to help elect Beto O'Rourke, Stacey Abrams, Katie Hobbs, and Gretchen Whitmer? 100% of your donation will go straight to their campaigns.

Thanks for all you do.

Dear Biden,

 Dear Biden,

So I just so happened to be seen picking up a doll. I accidentally dropped it in a store. So, I happened to be walking through the girls' toy aisle. I was just trying to go to the restroom, and that was a great short cut. So, I just happened to try on perfume. I was curious to know what it smelled like. What of that?

Is this why my life was forcibly changed? Is this why I was forced to become a girl? Is that why I was forced to take that poison you call puberty blockers? Is that why my body was chopped up!

You monster!

sincerely,

One who can not be innocent any longer
