Timor – Big news! Today, the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas granted a state wide temporary restraining order striking down Senate Bill 23, a law banning abortion at approximately six weeks of pregnancy. Abortions up to 22 weeks last missed period (LMP) are now again legal in Ohio, effective immediately. For the first time since June 24, Ohio patients are able to obtain an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. We have seen the devastating impact this law has had on people seeking abortions in Ohio, and we are grateful that, for now, Ohioans can access reproductive healthcare in their home state. This ruling sends a clear message to Ohio lawmakers: abortion bans are blatantly unconstitutional under Ohio's state constitution, which has broad protections for individual liberties. We are proud to bring this lawsuit with the National ACLU office, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and the law firm WilmerHale on behalf of Ohio abortion providers. Now that a temporary block is in place, we have asked the court enter a preliminary injunction to block the law for the duration of the case. This ruling is a huge victory for reproductive rights, not only for Ohio but also for the entire Midwest region. And in Texas, Greg Abbott cheered on the decision, celebrating the total ban on abortion beginning at conception, with no exception for rape or incest, which will go into effect across the state in the coming days.⁴

Without the protection of Roe at the federal level, it is absolutely essential that states have strong leaders who will fight to protect the right to bodily autonomy for the people of their states. A witness who supports abortion rights during the House Judiciary Committee's abortion hearing Wednesday said she believes a person can choose what gender they identify as and that, therefore, men can get pregnant and have abortions.

Aimee Arrambide, the executive director of the abortion advocacy group Avow Texas, was asked by Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) what she believes the definition of a woman is.

“I believe that everyone can identify for themselves," Arrambide said.

When asked if she then believed that men could therefore get pregnant and have abortions, her response was a simple "yes." Bishop did not push the topic any further.

Wednesday's meeting came after a draft opinion that revealed five Supreme Court Justices are prepared to overturn the historic rulings in Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood was leaked at the beginning of May.

The draft, written by conservative Justice Samuel Alito, said abortion laws belong in the hands of independent states instead of the federal government. However, if the official ruling, expected next month, does revert the power of abortion law back to the states, the procedure would become illegal in multiple states, including Texas, Missouri, and Tennessee.
